All CCV students have access to small classes, part-time schedules, online courses, individual advisors, and online tutoring, and in-person academic mentoring. CCV also welcomes all students and we strive to provide equal access to college courses for students with disabilities. If you need accommodations because of a disability that impacts your learning, it is your responsibility to take at least one of the steps below. It is recommended that you do this as soon as possible to allow for planning and preparation.

  • Answer “yes” to the disability question on your CCV application.
  • Complete the student self-disclosure form.
  • Tell an accessibility advisor or accessibility support staff that you have a disability and you would like accommodations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will happen after I submit a form or answer “yes” on the application?

You will receive an email with your next steps. These steps are the same as what you can find in this webpage.

Who will I talk to about this?

You will be assigned to work with an accessibility advisor who can help you with this process. This person will also be your academic advisor and support you in meeting your academic goals at CCV.

What if I do not know what accommodations I may need?

This is okay and is common, especially for first time college students. We will look at your documentation and talk with you about what has worked best for you in the past. Accommodations can also be updated and changed as needed when appropriate.

Can I bring someone to our meetings?

Absolutely.

Step 1: Learn about Accessibility Services at CCV

Learn more about accessibility services at CCV by reading our Accommodation Policy (compatible with screen readers).

If you had an IEP or 504 in high school, you may have some expectations for what accommodations look like in college. If so, we recommend that you review the following pdf document to clarify misconceptions or confusion about the process.

Differences between High School and College Accommodations (pdf)

Step 2: Gather Your Documentation

Collect any official paperwork that:

  • states and describes your disability,
  • explains how your disability may impact learning, and
  • is from an authorized agency, individual, or appropriate medical source and includes the names, titles, and professional credentials of the evaluator(s) or professional who can verify the disability
  • suggests reasonable accommodations (optional)

Examples of documentation include:

  • doctor’s letter dated, signed and printed on office letterhead
  • psychoeducational evaluation dated and signed by a psychologist
  • complete report from high school (IEPs and 504 plans are sometimes incomplete)

Step 3: Submit Your Documentation to CCV

You may drop off, mail, email, or fax your documentation to the CCV center nearest you (please note – Springfield and Middlebury locations will not be able to process your documentation). An accessibility advisor will review your documentation in advance of your appointment with them.

Step 4: Schedule an Appointment to Create Your Accommodation Plan

Schedule an appointment by calling your local center to request a meeting with an accessibility advisor. During your appointment, we will discuss your requests. Together we will consider your interests, strengths and weaknesses, documentation, course requirements, and the reasonability of your requests. Using this information, we will create your accommodation plan.

Accommodation plans need to be renewed each semester. Please reach out to your accessibility advisor before the start of classes each semester. Accommodations cannot be applied retroactively.

Step 5: Share Your Accommodation Plan with Your Instructors

You may email or give your plan directly to your instructor. If you or your instructor have any questions, you may ask your accessibility advisor.

Step 6: Check in Regularly with Your Accessibility Advisor

By checking in regularly with your accessibility advisor you will be able to maximize the benefits of your accommodation plan. Throughout college, you’ll be able to:

  • clarify learning preferences,
  • develop and sharpen learning strategies,
  • ask for help,
  • use resources such as Tutor.com and learning centers,
  • practice new ways to study and remember information, and
  • confirm which accommodations serve you best.

Online Course Accessibility Standard

The Community College of Vermont is committed to ensuring accessibility of its online coursework. Those with concerns about the digital accessibility of an online class and/or the digital materials used for an online class may notify the college using the Digital Accessibility Alert Form.

At CCV, we recognize the unique needs of our nearly 400 veteran and military-connected students (MCS). We have many different support services in place to help you with your needs inside and outside of school. Check in regularly with your Veteran Support Coordinator; no question is too small and no request is too minor.

Mentors and Tutors

At CCV, we believe that with hard work, students will succeed in their courses. Sometimes that hard work requires asking for help from an experienced learner who can coach you as you navigate new or unfamiliar course material. There are a number of mentoring and tutoring resources available for CCV students.

Learning Center Online Live. Students can access drop-in academic mentoring and support via Zoom from anywhere. You can access this service from your student Portal, or at this link. In person mentoring is available at CCV-Rutland and CCV-Montpelier.

Tutor.com. All enrolled CCV students have access to this 24/7 on-demand tutoring service that connects students with a professional tutor the minute they seek assistance. Go to your Canvas course online (every class has one!) and find Tutor.com: 24/7 Online Tutoring. Click on the link. No further login necessary.

VSCS Libraries. VSCS library services continue to be available to students wherever they happen to be. The VSCS Library Resources navigation link in Canvas has quick links for learning how to use the library, plus easy access to our Live Chat help service. Librarians are available to help with research projects or for help accessing library materials like full-text articles, eBooks, and streaming videos.

Academic Advisors. In certain circumstances your academic advisor can arrange for you to meet individually with an in-person tutor. Please ask your advisor for more guidance.

Faculty. Please reach out to your instructors if you have any questions about course work, need assistance understanding requirements, have circumstances that may require extensions or any other course specific question. Your instructors genuinely want you to succeed!

Specialized Career Services

We know from our experiences working with hundreds of veteran and military students over the years that your training and service make you an incredibly desirable employee. After all, in the classroom, you are leaders, strong team workers, good listeners, excellent communicators, and detail-oriented. These are the same skills employers tell us over and over that they look for when hiring. That means you are uniquely qualified for the job market when you combine your CCV academic and military experiences. Translating and integrating these prior and new sets of knowledge, skills, and experiences onto paper (cover letters, résumés, portfolios) requires effort and know-how. Our Career Services team is prepared to work with veteran and military students to effectively market themselves for a job search, tailoring materials to fit the qualifications of specific positions.

Transfer Support

In addition to the personalized academic advising you will receive during your time at CCV, we recognize that veterans and military students need to ensure a smooth transfer to maximize their benefits. We’ve developed relationships with the veterans services offices at colleges around the state to assist you with an easy transfer process. There may be many reasons you are starting with us and moving on afterwards. Some students finish an associate degree at CCV and then plan two additional years to finish a bachelor’s degree elsewhere. Other students come to CCV to fulfill prerequisite requirements for a graduate degree. No matter your goals, we will help you plan an efficient use of your benefits and support you through the transfer experience. Connect with your academic advisor and your Veteran and Military Resource Advisor (VMRA) for information.

Community Partnerships

The Veteran & Military Services Team at CCV works extensively with community partners throughout the state. We collaborate with civilian and veteran/military organizations alike. Within our host communities we facilitate robust, worthwhile, and sustainable relationships. These partnerships can take many forms, including curriculum development, forums and conferences, internships, volunteer work, career fairs, and more. We prioritize building and strengthening partnerships based on the needs and desires of our military-connected students.

Credit for What You Know

College-level learning doesn’t always occur in the classroom. We understand that the skills and knowledge you have acquired may have come through learning in the office, on the factory floor, in the military, or through various other life activities. And we believe you should be awarded college credit for that college-level learning. That’s where our Prior Learning Assessment programs can help. These options provide you, through course challenges, portfolio creation, and tests, the opportunity to earn college credits more efficiently and at a reduced cost. Prior Learning Assessment: It’s credit for what you know.

You’ve served your country, and CCV is proud to serve you. Our high-quality courses and small class sizes ensure you’re in the right place to enhance your skills, deepen your knowledge, and strengthen your employment prospects. CCV serves nearly 400 veteran and military students each semester, and all of them receive specialized support from our Veterans & Military Services Team. Whether it’s answering your questions, helping you navigate the steps to getting started or accessing your military education benefits, or helping you map your future plans and goals, CCV is here for you. We understand your needs and we’re honored you have chosen to pursue your academic career with us.

Enhanced services for military veterans at CCV are funded by the J. Warren and Lois McClure Foundation, the Hoehl Family Foundation, and other private donors.
