Student Advising & Support

CCV advisors use an advising model that places the student at the center. Through asking open-ended questions, advisors learn about your goals and needs. Advisors partner with you to:

• Explore and clarify career goals
• Inform how educational pathways align with careers
• Identify the knowledge, skills, and beliefs you need to succeed
• Create a personalized academic plan to guide to graduation and transfer
• Guide you in setting short- and long-term academic goals
• Provide general information, resources, and referrals to help you reach your goals
• Learn about your personal circumstances that could support or interfere with your college progress, including:
  • academic skills
  • belonging and community
  • health and wellness
  • career choice
  • finances
  • motivation to complete
  • managing commitments
• Assist you in choosing the courses that will satisfy your degree and educational goals
• Address academic concerns or issues that develop

Tips for working with an academic advisor:

• Plan to meet with your advisor at least once per semester, especially during your first few semesters at CCV and as you near graduation. You can schedule an appointment online or by calling your academic center.
• Reach out to your advisor whenever you want to develop a habit that supports your progress, sharpen a skill that will help you stay motivated, have a question, or want to share a success.
• It is important that you feel comfortable working with your advisor. If you feel like a different advisor would better meet your needs, just say so. If you are not comfortable talking about this with your current advisor, speak with someone at the front desk. An administrative assistant can help you make the transition.
