Charting a Path at CCV

When Natalie graduated from high school, she knew one thing for certain—she wanted to continue her education. What she didn’t know yet was where that path would lead. “I always knew I wanted to go to college…but I didn’t exactly know what program I wanted to do,” she said.

Her first step along the path was enrolling at CCV right after high school, choosing a college that was local and offered the flexibility that fit her life. “I picked CCV because I could stay at home and work and also complete my college career,” she said. “It was really helpful being able to make money and do classes online at my own pace.” 

She started with three classes and quickly found her rhythm, moving into a full-time schedule while continuing to work. At first, Natalie explored her options through general education courses. Then, during her first semester, something clicked. “I took a nutrition class, and that really sparked my interest in the medical field,” she said. With support from CCV faculty and advisors, that spark turned into a clear direction as she focused on a path toward a career in healthcare. 

In June 2024, Natalie graduated with an associate degree in health science and a medical assisting certificate—an accomplishment made even more meaningful by the fact that she graduated debt-free. With the help of 802 Opportunity, and other financial aid, she was able to complete her education without taking on student loan debt. “I received grants…and some scholarships from VSAC, which really helped me graduate debt-free from CCV,” she said. “That was a big key reason why I chose to go to CCV.”

Shortly after graduating, Natalie began working as a medical assistant at the Hardwick Area Health Center, where she works directly with providers and patients. Her days are hands-on, taking vital signs, drawing blood, administering shots, and supporting providers with patient care. “CCV helped me get where I am today by providing me with the knowledge of the clinical skills…and confidence in the medical field,” she said. Now more than a year into her role, Natalie has found meaning in the everyday moments of patient care. “What made me want to work in healthcare is just helping others,” she said. “Now by being a medical assistant, I see that even just a small interaction with patients can just make their day so much better.”

Inspired by her experience, Natalie is already looking ahead. Her next step along her education path is continuing on at Vermont State University to become a registered nurse, where an initiative called the Vermont Transfer Guarantee will allow her to seamlessly transfer her earned credits. “I’m interested in attending Vermont State University because it’s local and they partner with CCV so I can have all my credits transfer,” she said. “I should have almost half my degree done in the nursing program.”

Looking back, Natalie didn’t start college with a clear career plan, but with the right support, flexibility, and opportunities, she found her direction. “I think I learned a lot from taking classes at CCV,” Natalie said. “Not just the work and the clinical stuff, but communicating with peers and instructors, taught me a lot of important things that I’ll need to know going to VTSU.” She added, “I’m so thankful that I graduated from CCV, debt-free and not starting another degree with debt already under my belt.” 

For students who may be unsure about their next step, Natalie offers simple advice: “if you are on the fence about attending CCV, I would definitely recommend it…especially if you’re currently working and need a flexible pathway to further your education.”
