A Leap of Faith

Trevor Farr drives a 2018 Toyota Tundra the color of a cayenne pepper. The truck smells like it came off the lot yesterday. It’s spotless, inside and out—minus a baseball cap and his son’s (also spotless) car seat in the back.

Connecting Communities

“I didn’t work well with school, but I was smart. I would skip school and go read books,” says Richard Witting. He dropped out of high school at 17, tried a few classes at CCV, and then moved to the West Coast for more than a decade. In Portland and San Francisco, he returned to familiar work: food.

Credibility and Integrity

Gary Taylor served in the military and worked as a police officer after graduating from Burlington High School in 1973. He didn’t think a college degree was all that important. Taylor grew up in a blue collar family with a father who believed that if you didn’t work with your hands, it didn’t count as work.

Early to College, Early to Career

Paige Perkins is ready to get to work. She has been since she was a junior in high school. She is the kind of person who’s spent a lot of time thinking about what she wants to be when she grows up. “I always thought I wanted to be a forensic psychologist,” she says. “That was my eighth grade project.” And by sophomore year of high school, Perkins had set her sights on becoming a nurse.

Connections Are Everything

“If you asked me three years ago if I would have come to Montpelier to talk about leadership, I would have probably not answered you. When I graduated from high school, I wasn’t the type of guy to go out and do things. I wasn’t really involved in my community,” said Justin Bourdeau. “But when I started taking classes at CCV, I started doing things for my community that I didn’t think I would be doing."

Social Responsibility

When Stacy Garciadealba was getting ready to graduate from high school, she traveled from her hometown of Grafton to tour colleges all along the East Coast. She left every visit feeling that “this isn’t for me.” She was the oldest in her family, the first child to go through the college process—“I called myself ‘the trial child,’” she said—and she’d be paying her own way.

The Leadership of Listening

For Shanna LaFlamme and Tracy Moyer, leadership starts with listening. Both are dedicated to helping their neighbors face mental health and substance abuse issues, and they say that often the most effective way to do that is by going back to the basics.

Core Beliefs

These days, Dylan Giambatista spends most of his time under Montpelier’s golden dome— meeting with fellow lawmakers, discussing the most pressing issues in Vermont, bringing a bit of youthful energy to the working museum that is our State House.

America: Melting Pot, or Something Else?

You can tell a native New Yorker from a non-native by how aware they choose to be of their presence on the subway. They sleep, ensured by their city-formed adaptation to waking up just before their stop. They read books. Before cell phones, newspapers were likely a popular form of dissociating.

People Need Us

Livija Mujkanovic immigrated to the U.S. from Bosnia at 19. She arrived in Vermont with her family, speaking no English. During her first year here, she worked two jobs—one as a housekeeper and one at Burger King. At home in Bosnia, she had been a student in law school.
