When you think of science fairs, what’s the first thing you think of? Probably not Miss Vermont. But that might change if you stop by CCV-Winooski next Tuesday.
Alayna Westcom, Miss Vermont 2015, will be at our Winooski academic center next week conducting a science experiment during our first Science Fair, being held February 9th and 10th at CCV-Winooski. Westcom is the first Miss America contestant to ever perform a science experiment at the competition—yep, you read that right. Seven Days even called her a “science nerd.”
But we digress. Since winning the Miss Vermont title, Westcom has travelled around the state speaking to students about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Her goal is to reach 10,000 school children by the end of her tenure.
Pretty cool, right? But that’s not even the half of it! We’re also hosting a STEM job and internship fair where you can meet representatives from UVM’s Rubenstein School, EPSCoR, the Vermont State Parks, and others. We also have some guest speakers lined up and a few other science tricks up our sleeves.
February 9, 11:15 a.m. – Miss Vermont
February 9, 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. – STEM Job/Internship Fair
February 10, 11:15 a.m. – Guest speakers and foresters Kimberly Coleman & Nicole Stefanowicz
Not enough to get you over to Abenaki Way? How about this then: free hot dogs for lunch every day of the fair. Yep, you read that right, too. McKenzie Country Classics has generously offered to sponsor this event and they’re providing free hot dogs to everyone who shows up. So, science nerds, head on over to CCV-Winooski next week and get your STEM on!
Oh, and, have you heard the one about the sick chemist? If you can’t helium, and you can’t curium, you’ll probably have to barium.
